Climbing Roses
Many roses have climbing rose counterparts that occur, when a rose creates a natural mutation or climbing sport. The rose blooms will look like the original rose, but the bush habit will be to make a huge, often sprawling plant.
Most climbing roses take 2 or 3 years to establish the plant itself, before they begin to produce their abundance of blooms. That is why climbers are only lightly prune each year, with older wood being carefully removed after about 5 years.
Climbers also prefer to be grow horizonally, which encourages the production of flowers. Only a few climbers (known as pillar climbers) will make blooms on a totally vertical cane. (Photo - Rosa Banksiae Lutea)

Tree Roses
Tree roses are like bushes atop a long stick. The long stick is called the standard, and several grafted are made at the top of the standard to create the beautiful, bountiful displays of flowers.
Some trees are grafted with more than one variety of rose; but the shape is generally better, when only one variety is used on a standard. (Photo - Iceberg tree rose at the Flintzer home)

Rose Shows & Exhibiting
Rose shows are a wonderful place to see breathtaking blooms and meet some of the fine rose growers. You might even meet a hummingbird, among the blooms. (Photo - Perfect Moment bloom in a floating 'Bowl' competition)
